In short, yes. There are a range of domestic disability supports available to people living with a mental health problem in New South Wales. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for support services for eligible people with a mental health condition. This includes assistance with daily activities such as personal care, household tasks and transport. People can also access short-term respite and supported accommodation from the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing’s Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP). SAAP helps people who need temporary accommodation due to homelessness or other social issues related to their mental illness.
Domestic disability support providers offer assistance with everyday tasks such as personal care, mobility, meal preparation and housekeeping. In addition, they provide emotional support to help individuals cope with their disability and build self-esteem. This could include helping them connect with other people or providing guidance regarding diet and exercise. In addition to helping individuals manage their disability on an everyday basis, domestic disability support providers may also be able to help develop social skills that allow them to better interact in a variety of situations. They may be able to assist in identifying interests and hobbies, providing guidance on how to get involved in activities and encouraging participation in group activities.
First and foremost, they need to be compassionate and understanding of the unique needs of their clients. They should also be patient, as working with individuals with disabilities can require extra time and effort. A provider must also possess excellent communication skills in order to effectively communicate with their client’s care team. Additionally, they should be organised and detail-oriented so that they are able to properly document services provided and track progress over time. At Active Lifestyle Supports, we possess all these qualities and more.
